Monti Lucretili
Lazio
This range of limestone peaks rises just beyond the northeastern edge of the Rome metropolitan area, protected as a regional park since the 1980s and offering some of the closest genuine mountain hiking to the capital. The Licenza valley on the range's edge is identified with the countryside retreat the poet Horace received from his patron Maecenas, a connection still marked with a small archaeological site. Beech forest cloaks the higher slopes, with golden eagles occasionally spotted overhead.
