Monti Ausoni — Gola di San Michele

The Monti Ausoni between the Pontine plain and the Tyrrhenian coast are limestone mountains with deep gorges carved by torrents from the Apennines. The Gola di San Michele above Fondi has a Byzantine cave church carved into the gorge wall and a natural limestone arch 300 m up the valley. The gorge forest has veteran holm oak (leccio) and strawberry tree. Little-known outside the area.
