Monteriggioni's circuit of walls and 14 towers, built by Siena to guard its northern border, is so distinctive it earned a mention in Dante's Inferno. Part of the rampart walk is open to visitors, and the flat surrounding lanes give classic views of the towers against the Chianti hills.
