Montepulciano's Renaissance streets climb a narrow ridge above vast underground cellars carved from the tufo rock, still used to age the town's famous Vino Nobile red wine. The climb to the top of the ridge gives views over the Val di Chiana, distinct from the softer Val d'Orcia views further west.
