Monte Zoncolan (1,730 m) is famous as the hardest Giro d'Italia summit finish — the east side approach averages 11% gradient for 10 km. On foot from Ovaro the west approach is more gradual, crossing through old beech and silver fir forest to open meadows. The panorama from the summit covers the entire Carnian Alps to Julian Alps arc. Chamois and marmots abundant above 1,400 m.
