Monte Vulture Crater Rim

Monte Vulture last erupted many thousands of years ago and its collapsed caldera now holds the Monticchio lakes deep in the crater. The slopes are cloaked in chestnut and beech forest famous locally for wild mushrooms and the Aglianico vineyards lower down. On clear days the rim trail offers views toward the Ofanto valley and, in winter, distant snow-capped Apennine ridges.
