Monte Vairano

Molise

Monte Vairano, cloaked in Turkey oak and hornbeam, carries one of the best-preserved Samnite oppida in Italy — kilometres of polygonal walls, a monumental gate and the site where (tradition says) Pope Celestine V was captured. Marked forest loops link the ramparts and a medieval tavern site.
