Monte Totila, Appennino Molisano

Monte Totila (1,536 m) takes its name from the Ostrogoth king Totila who used this ridge as a strategic lookout during the Gothic Wars (535–554 AD). The summit commands views of Molise, Campania, Lazio and Abruzzo simultaneously. The ascent from Frosolone passes through old-growth beech with wolf tracks frequently visible in soft ground. The summit plateau has a small military chapel dating from the Risorgimento.
