Monte Soratte

Rising abruptly from the flat Tiber valley, this ridge's isolation has made it a landmark visible from Rome itself, and its slopes were tunneled extensively by German forces during WWII to house a command bunker, parts of which are now open for guided visits. Several small hermitages and a monastery, some dating back over a thousand years, cling to its slopes above the tunnels. Holm oak and Mediterranean scrub cover most of the ridge.
