Monte San Michele & the Carso battlefields

Monte San Michele changed hands repeatedly in 1915–16 at enormous cost, and Italian and Austro-Hungarian lines still lace its wooded slopes, along with the Cannoniera and the "trincea dei razzi". A marked route from San Martino del Carso — the village of Ungaretti's poem — links the positions and a small museum.
