Monte Sacro (1,056 m) is the highest summit of the Gargano promontory — ancient Aleppo pine, oak and beech forest that is a remnant of the Hercynian forest that covered Europe before the Ice Ages. The Gargano is an 'island' of ancient limestone separated from the Apennines — its flora and fauna are unique. Roe deer. Goshawk. The summit gives a panorama of the Adriatic from the Tremiti Islands to the heel of Italy. Dogs off-leash.
