Monte Sabotino, Gorizia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Monte Sabotino (609 m) above Gorizia on the Italian-Slovenian border was the site of 11 battles of the Isonzo front in WWI — Italian and Austrian troops fought repeatedly for this hill. The summit has tunnels, bunkers and trenches still intact, some open to visitors. The view from the summit is into Slovenia (Nova Gorica) and across the Isonzo-Soča valley. Eagle owl on the north face. Dogs off-leash.
