Monte Rosa East Face, Macugnaga

The east face of Monte Rosa above Macugnaga is the largest mountain face in the Alps — 2,700 m of ice-plastered rock rising in one sweep. The valley itself was settled by Walser German-speaking colonists in the 13th century; their distinctive wooden chalets survive. Trails to the Belvedere glacier bring you to within touching distance of crevassed ice.
