Monte Pisano — Rocca di Verruca

Monte Pisano (917 m) is the small but dramatic range between Pisa and Lucca. The Rocca di Verruca castle (ruins, 12th century) was a Pisan frontier fortress giving views over both city territories. The summit massif has Mediterranean scrub and Holm oak — a rare upland maquis in Tuscany. Peregrine falcon nests on the Verruca cliffs. The view from the summit encompasses the Arno plain and the Ligurian coast.
