Monte Nerone
Marche
This mountain's limestone flanks hide dozens of small caves and sinkholes, some of which sheltered partisan groups during the German occupation in 1943-44, a history still marked by local memorials. Beech and oak forest cover most of the slopes, with open pasture near the summit offering views across the Marche pre-Apennines. Piobbico below is known for a curious old local tradition, the "Society of Ugly People."
