Monte Matajur
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Monte Matajur (1,641 m) rises right on the Italy-Slovenia border in the Julian Prealps, its long grassy ridge giving one of the widest panoramas in Friuli — the main Julian Alps to the north, the Adriatic and even the Venetian plain visible on very clear days. The area saw heavy fighting in WWI and old trench lines are still traceable near the summit. It's a serious full-day hike rather than a short outing.
