Monte Matajur (1,641 m) above Caporetto (Kobarid, now Slovenia) was the scene of Erwin Rommel's most celebrated WWI exploit — a bold encirclement that captured 9,000 Italian prisoners and won him the Pour le Mérite in 1917. The ascent from Drenchia in the Natisone valley passes through old oak and chestnut forest to the cross summit with a 360° view of the Julian-Carnian Alps and the Friulian plain.
