The Piano di Ruggio (1,548 m) plateau on the Basilicata side of the Pollino National Park is the most intact high plateau in the park — no ski facilities, no cable cars. The ancient Pinus leucodermis (Loricato pine) trees on the surrounding ridge are some of the oldest living things in Italy (up to 1,200 years). The wolf pack of the Piano di Ruggio is one of the most studied in Italy.
