Monte Isola
Lombardy
Rising from the middle of Lago d'Iseo, Monte Isola has been closed to private cars for decades, leaving its ring road to walkers, cyclists, and the small electric shuttles that serve its fishing villages. A steep path climbs from the shore to the Santuario della Madonna della Ceriola at the summit, with a 360-degree view over the lake to the Bergamasque and Camonica Alps. Fishing nets still hang drying along the lanes of Peschiera Maraglio, one of the island's oldest hamlets.
