The Altopiano di Bojano (800 m) at the base of the Matese mountains in Molise is a glacial plain surrounded by karst peaks. Apennine chamois from the Matese Regional Park regularly descend to the plateau margins at dawn. Common kestrel hovers over the open ground. The Matese mountains above have limestone peaks to 2,050 m. The plateau has a completely open 360° horizon.
