Monte Fossa delle Felci

At just under 970 metres, this extinct volcanic cone is the highest summit anywhere in the Aeolian archipelago, its crater long dormant and now filled with unusually dense woodland for the otherwise dry islands, including chestnut, oak and holly. The name 'Fossa delle Felci' refers to the ferns thriving in the moist crater floor, unusual vegetation for the arid Aeolians. Salina is also known for its capers and Malvasia wine, both grown on the volcano's lower terraced slopes.
