Monte Ferru (1,050 m) near Cuglieri on the western Sardinian coast is a volcanic basalt intrusion — the dark rock contrasts with the surrounding limestone. The old-growth holm oak forest on the upper slopes (above 700 m) is the finest in Sardinia. Sardinian deer (cervo sardo) density here is the highest on the island. The summit gives views of the Sinis peninsula and the sea to the west.
