Monte Ermada, Carso

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Monte Ermada was the last Austro-Hungarian bastion before Trieste in 1917, and its scrubby limestone dome is riddled with caverns, walkways and battery emplacements now on a marked "historic trail". The summit and its ruined church look over the Gulf of Trieste and the Isonzo mouth.
