Monte Cucco (1,566 m) is the highest summit of the Umbrian Apennines north of the Sibillini. Below its wildflower summit plateau, the Grotta di Monte Cucco is Italy's fifth deepest cave system (922 m deep) with a 3 km accessible section. The summit walk across the eastern plateau in May is extraordinary for orchids — 30 species recorded within 1 km. Paragliders use the western ridge.
