Monte Cavo

This summit was sacred to the ancient Latin League, which held a shared religious sanctuary here dedicated to Jupiter Latiaris, and traces of the old paved processional road, the Via Sacra, still survive lower on the slopes. The peak marks the highest point of the wider Colli Albani volcanic district, whose eruptions shaped the craters now filled by Lakes Albano and Nemi. Modern radio and TV towers occupy the summit itself, but the view toward Rome and both the Tyrrhenian and, on rare clear days, the Adriatic remains dramatic.
