Monte Amiata — Vetta e Cratere

Monte Amiata (1,738 m) is a dormant volcano — the last eruption was 180,000 years ago — rising above the Val d'Orcia in southern Tuscany. The summit crater rim gives a 360° panorama across to the Tyrrhenian Sea, Corsica, Umbria and Lazio. The lower slopes have the largest chestnut forest in Tuscany. The mercury mines below Abbadia San Salvatore were the world's largest in the early 20th century.
