Montagna Grande, Pizzoferrato
Abruzzo
The beech forest above Pizzoferrato in the Sangro valley is one of the finest old-growth beech forests in the southern Apennines — trees up to 400 years old and 30 m tall. The Eurasian lynx has been confirmed in this area in recent years (camera traps). The autumn colour (October–November) is extraordinary: the entire mountain turns gold and amber. Wild boar and wolf are common.
