From Villair above Courmayeur the path climbs to Rifugio Bertone, then follows the open crest of the Mont de la Saxe to the Testa Bernarda. Every step faces the north walls of the Mont Blanc massif — the Aiguille Noire, the Grandes Jorasses, the Dent du Géant — with the Val Ferret far below.
