Pietrabbondante Samnite Sanctuary
Molise
Pietrabbondante contains the most important sanctuary of the Samnites — the mountain people who came closest to defeating Rome. The site has a large Italic theatre (2nd century BC) and a twin-temple complex on a high ridge. The Samnites resisted Rome for centuries; this hilltop sanctuary was the spiritual centre of their resistance.
