The path along the opposite bank of the Matera gravina gives the classic view of the Sassi di Matera UNESCO World Heritage cave city — 9,000 years of continuous human habitation visible in the canyon walls opposite. The path passes cave churches (rupestrian) still with Byzantine frescoes on the opposite side. The canyon floor has old almond and fig trees. Dogs allowed on the gravina path.
