Margherita di Savoia Salt Lagoon

The saline di Margherita di Savoia are Europe's largest salt pans by area — 3,700 ha. In winter the shallow water turns pink from Dunaliella salina algae; up to 60,000 flamingos winter here. The flat dyke path runs along the lagoon edge. The salt has been harvested here since Roman times.
