Taranto's Città Vecchia sits on an islet linked by a swing bridge and a stone bridge to the modern city, keeping the columns of a Greek temple of Poseidon, a spiralling medieval fabric and the Castello Aragonese. Behind it the shallow Mar Piccolo lagoon is a working mussel farm and a birdwatching site.
