The Majella massif is riddled with hermit caves used by medieval ascetics, including Pope Celestine V who retreated here before reluctantly accepting the papacy. The Orfento gorge trail passes 40 documented hermitages carved into the canyon walls, with views up to the 2,793 m Majella plateau.
