Magredi di Pordenone
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Fed by the wide, braided beds of the Cellina and Meduna torrents, this arid plain of gravel and drought-tolerant grassland is ecologically closer to a Central Asian steppe than typical Italian countryside, supporting rare ground-nesting birds like the little ringed plover and stone-curlew. The open, flat terrain and huge skies make it feel strikingly different from the wooded valleys just to the north.
