Magredi di Cordovado

The Magredi are wide, stony alluvial plains built by Alpine rivers spreading gravel across the Friuli lowlands, creating a dry, steppe-like habitat unlike anything else in the region. Skylarks, stone-curlews and little ringed plovers breed on the open ground, and wildflowers colonise the gravel in spring. It's a strange, semi-arid landscape squeezed between the Alps and the Adriatic plain.
