Madonna di Viggiano, Val d'Agri

The sanctuary of the Madonna di Viggiano (1,726 m) on Monte Viggiano above the Val d'Agri is the most important Marian pilgrimage site in southern Italy — the Black Madonna draws 200,000 pilgrims annually in May and September. The summit is reached by a pilgrimage track through beech forest. Golden eagle nests on the adjacent ridge. The Val d'Agri below is Basilicata's main oil field.
