Lecce — Basilica di Santa Croce & Barocco Leccese

Lecce's soft local limestone, easy to carve when freshly quarried but hardening with exposure, allowed local stonemasons to develop an especially ornate style of baroque decoration known as barocco leccese, seen at its finest on the facade of the Basilica di Santa Croce. The flat, level streets of the old town make for easy exploring.
