Tolfa Hills Etruscan Walk

Lazio

The Monti della Tolfa are volcanic mineral hills between Rome and Civitavecchia, where alum (essential for medieval textile dyeing) was discovered in 1462 — giving the Papal States a monopoly on a resource previously controlled by the Ottomans. The hills still have semi-wild longhorn cattle (Maremmana breed) grazing freely.
