The Laguna di Orbetello is a WWF nature reserve — a lagoon enclosed between the Monte Argentario promontory and the Maremma coast. Greater flamingo (3,000+) are present year-round. Spoonbill, osprey and marsh harrier breed. The lagoon fish farms produce the renowned Orbetello bottarga (dried mullet roe). The circuit walk on the dyke between the two lagoon basins gives close flamingo views.
