The Lagoni di Monterotondo near Larderello in the Sienese Maremma are natural geothermal pools and fumaroles — steam vents that have been exploited since Etruscan times for boric acid (borax). Larderello built the world's first geothermal power station in 1904. The landscape of steaming pools and white mineral deposits is completely alien. The power station museum is excellent.
