Lago Trasimeno (128 km², max depth 6 m) near Perugia is the largest lake in central Italy and the fourth largest in Italy — famously where Hannibal ambushed and destroyed a 30,000-man Roman army in 217 BC (Battle of Trasimeno — 15,000 Romans killed). Greater flamingo colony (up to 500 birds). Osprey. The Isola Maggiore has a historic fishing village. Dogs welcome on the shore. Castiglione del Lago beach.
