Lago Piccolo di Monticchio

Basilicata

Along with its larger twin, this basin fills a volcanic crater on the flanks of Monte Vulture, surrounded by dense beech and chestnut forest. The Benedictine Abbazia di San Michele overlooks the water from a cliffside perch nearby. Otters have been recorded in the lake system, alongside a healthy population of dragonflies in summer.
