Lago di Piana degli Albanesi

This artificial lake sits below the town of Piana degli Albanesi, founded by Albanian refugees in the fifteenth century and still using Arbëresh language and Byzantine-rite traditions today. Reed beds along the shallower margins attract herons and migrating waders, while the surrounding Sicani hills carry wheat fields and olive groves typical of Sicily's interior. Cyclists and walkers use the road circling much of the shoreline.
