The Campanian side of the Matese massif approaches from Cusano Mutri through one of the finest beech forests in southern Italy. Bocca della Selva ('mouth of the forest') at 1,395 m opens to the high plateau with the Matese lake visible below. The landscape combines northern Apennine forest with southern karst limestone.
