Lago Grande di Monticchio

This is the bigger of the twin volcanic lakes on Monte Vulture, deep enough to support a resident pike population introduced decades ago. A small museum on volcanology sits on the shore, and paddle boats are available in summer. The surrounding forest is among the richest in Basilicata for birdlife, including kingfishers along the reed beds.
