Lago di Varano, Gargano

Lago di Varano is a coastal lagoon separated from the Adriatic by a narrow sand bar on the northern Gargano. It is one of the most productive eel fisheries in Italy, worked by traditional fishermen using fixed-net traps. Up to 3,000 flamingos winter here; the lagoon also has breeding little terns and Mediterranean gulls.
