Lago di Vagli
Tuscany
Created in the 1940s by damming the Edron stream, this reservoir flooded the village of Fabbriche di Careggine, whose stone houses and bridge reappear on the rare occasions the lake is fully drained, drawing crowds when it happens. The surrounding Garfagnana peaks, including the Apuane Alps to the west, ring the lake with dramatic relief. A path circles part of the shoreline through chestnut woods.
