Lago di San Giuliano
Basilicata
Formed by a dam on the Bradano river, this reservoir's shallow margins and reed beds have made it an important wetland for grey herons, black storks and wintering ducks. A birdwatching hide overlooks the quieter northern arm, away from the fishing areas. The surrounding badland hills, known locally as calanchi, add a stark, eroded backdrop typical of the Materano countryside.
