Lago di Resia

When this lake was created in 1950 by damming two smaller natural lakes for hydroelectric power, the village of Curon Venosta was submerged beneath it; only the 14th-century church bell tower still pokes above the surface, famously frozen over and walkable in winter. The surrounding Val Venosta is one of Italy's driest alpine valleys, with a distinct, almost steppe-like light.
