Lago di Pilato

Marche

Lago di Pilato sits in a glacial cirque below Monte Vettore in the Sibillini, its distinctive two-lobed 'eyeglass' shape visible from the approach ridge. It hosts the only wild population of the fairy shrimp Chirocephalus marchesonii, found nowhere else in the world, and the lake sometimes turns reddish when they bloom in numbers. Legend holds that Pontius Pilate's body was thrown in after his exile — hence the name.
